The Everyday Life of an Optimistic Guy

Sunday, September 11, 2005

Hello everybody.

I havent posted in a while.

A lot has happened. Doesnt matter what has happened, what is important is that right now everything is as ok as it can be. And yes, thats leaning more towards the optimistic side.

Really I came here to post up a song I really like. Its by an incredible band named The Shins. Their lyricist writes some really good stuff and I love his way of writing it. Anywhos, Imma post up a song titled "Kissing The Lipless". I highly recommend you download it.

The Shins - "Kissing The Lipless"

Called to see if you're back
Was still aligned and your sheets
Were growing grass all on the corners of your bed
But you've got too much to wear
On your sleeves
It has got too much to do with me
And secretly I want to bury in the yard
The grey remains of a friendship scarred

You told us of your new life there
You've got someone comin' round
Gluing tinsel to your crown
He's got you talking pretty loud
You berate
Remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes
You say you're still in love
If its true, what can be done?
Its hard to leave all these moments behind

Called to see if you're back
Was still aligned and your sheets
Were growing grass all on the corners of your bed
But you've got too much to wear
On your sleeves
Its too much to do with me
And secretly I want to bury in the yard
The grey remains of a friendship scarred

You tested your metal
Of doe's skin and petals
While kissing the lipless
Who bleed all the sweetness away

Les Claypool is my bass idol.

He is a funk/flamenco style bass player and he is fucken awesome. Ive known this for some time. He is the bassist for Primus. It is only today that I realized just how truly great he is when I saw a live performance of "Tommy The Cat" and he did a bass solo that was fucken incredible. It inspired me to start to learn funk style technique on bass, which is THE most difficult of techniques. Les started learning it at my age too so if I keep at it, I should be pretty good by the time Im about 20.

This band (Steak Dolls [my band]) is so freakin diverse. We play anything from funk to fucken punk. If we were ever to be classified as anything, it'd be just good ol american rock. We're too damn diversed to be labeled many things, so just call us rock. Other wise, say we're Blues/Grunge/Punk/Funk/Jazz/Alternative.

We have a show this Tuesday.

This is an awesome song from an awesome band. Its "So Says I" by The Shins. That Shins are very much a kickass recent band. If you dont like the shins, then you're a terrorist lol. J/k. Stupid Bush...

The Shins - "So Says I"

An address to the golden door
I was strumming on a stone again
Pulling teeth from the pimps of gore
When hatched a tragic opera in my mind...

And it told of a new design
In which every soul is duty bound
To uphold all the statues of boredom
Therein lies the fatal flaw of the red age

Because it was nothing like we'd ever drempt
Our lust for life had gone away with the rent we hated
And because it made no money, nobody saved no one's life

So we burned all our uniforms
And let nature take its course again
And the big ones just eat all the little ones
That sent us back to the drawing board

In our darkest hours
We have all asked for some Angel to come
Sprinkle his dust all around
But all our crying voices they can't turn it around
And you've had some crazy conversations of your own

We've got rules and maps and guns in our backs
But we still can't just behave ourselves
Even if to save our own lives so, says I,
WE ARE A BRUTAL KIND

Cuz this is nothing like we'd ever drempt
Tell Sir Thomas More we've got another failed attempt
Cuz if it makes them money, they might just give you life this time

Take a guess at what its about lol. Shouldnt be too hard.

Anywhos hope everyone is well.

Mood: Relaxed
Music: Strokes - "Reptilia"

Last night went pretty well.

All last night I was just saying "we sucked, we sounded horrible" but after some analyzing, we didnt really. There were mistakes that I knew were gonan happen; Frank forgot some lyrics and made them up as he went/mumbled random things. The guitar was louder than everything and I wish it would have been more balanced. But overall we did alright for our first gig. It was intimidating to see all the other bands with kickass equipment and then us with our small amps and our buckets (Joeys drumset lol). The other bands had cabinest and half stacks and fucken Pearl Drums. We had combo amps and a Pulse Drumset... Oh boy. But it didnt matter cuz I think we were better than the previous band.

Thank you sooooooooo much to everyone that came. It means a lot to me and the band. I think we may go back to play there sometime or we may play somewhere else, as always Ill keep everyone informed.

Here is the setlist we used last night:

Annorexorcist
Bathroom Graffiti
So Be
You Know
Cinnamon
*Acid

We werent planning on playing Acid. Frank just said to me "lets play it come on" right after Cinnamon was over so we did. Its only a like 45 sec song lol. So yeah. Originally we were gonna end with Revenge Of The Gnomes but we had no time for it. We did well and I know there are many more gigs to come. Forward and Beyond I say.

Again thanks to everyone who came, I love you all. The band loves you all.

Have a nice day everyone.

Ive been listening to Coldplay lately. Especially this one song "The Scientist". It helps me think. It puts me in a place where everything is clear. It also reminds me why there is love in the world and that not everything is easy and that sometimes one has to be patient, understanding and dedicated to do things. I love this song.

Coldplay - The Scientist

Come up to meet you, tell you Im sorry
You dont know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions
Oh, lets go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a silence apart

Nobody said it was easy
Its such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
Tell me you love me, come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh its such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
Im going back to the start

Ooooh

That song might also be dedicated to someone. Someone I care for very deeply.

Anywhos, I hope everyone is doing well. I hope everyone has a good day. Please try to come on Sunday. The only reason u dont come is A) Death in the family B) Non-curable disease or C) Out of town. lol.
